  4 motorola tmos power mosfet transistor device data power mosfet switching switching behavior is most easily modeled and predicted by recognizing that the power mosfet is charge controlled. the lengths of various switching intervals ( d t) are determined by how fast the fet input capacitance can be charged by current from the generator. the published capacitance data is dif ficult to use for calculat - ing r is e a nd f al l b ecaus e d raingat e c apacitanc e v aries greatly with applied voltage. accordingly , gate charge data is used. in most cases, a satisfactory estimate of average input current (i g(av) ) can be made from a rudimentary analysis of the drive circuit so that t = q/i g(av) during the rise and fall time interval when switching a resis - tive load, v gs remains virtually constant at a level known as the plateau voltage, v sgp . therefore, rise and fall times may be approximated by the following: t r = q 2 x r g /(v gg v gsp ) t f = q 2 x r g /v gsp where v gg = the gate drive voltage, which varies from zero to v gg r g = the gate drive resistance and q 2 and v gsp are read from the gate charge curve. during the turnon and turnof f delay times, gate current is not constant. the simplest calculation uses appropriate val- ues from the capacitance curves in a standard equation for voltage change in an rc network. the equations are: t d(on) = r g c iss in [v gg /(v gg v gsp )] t d(off) = r g c iss in (v gg /v gsp ) the capacitance (c iss ) is read from the capacitance curve at a voltage corresponding to the of fstate condition when cal - culating t d(on) and is read at a voltage corresponding to the onstate when calculating t d(off) . at h ig h s witchin g s peeds , p arasiti c c ircuit e lements complicate t h e a nalysis. t h e i nductanc e o f t h e m osfet source l ead , i nsid e t h e p ackag e a n d i n t h e c ircui t w iring which is common to both the drain and gate current paths, produces a voltage at the source which reduces the gate drive current. the voltage is determined by ldi/dt, but since di/dt is a function of drain current, the mathematical solution is complex. the mosfet output capacitance also compli - cates t h e m athematics . a n d f inally , m osfet s h av e f inite internal g at e r esistanc e w hic h e ffectivel y a dd s t o t he resistance of the driving source, but the internal resistance is difficult to measure and, consequently, is not specified. the resistive switching time variation versus gate resis - tance (figure 9) shows how typical switching performance is affected by the parasitic circuit elements. if the parasitics were not present, the slope of the curves would maintain a value of unity regardless of the switching speed. the circuit used to obtain the data is constructed to minimize common inductance in the drain and gate circuit loops and is believed readily achievable with board mounted components. most power electronic loads are inductive; the data in the figure is taken with a resistive load, which approximates an optimally snubbed inductive load. power mosfet s may be safely operated into an inductive load; however , snubbing reduces switching losses. figure 7. capacitance variation 10 0 10 15 20 25 gatetosource or draintosource voltage (volts) c, cap acitance (pf) 5000 2000 1000 0 v gs v ds t j = 25 c v ds = 0 v v gs = 0 v 4000 3000 5 5 c iss c oss c iss c rss c rss free datasheet http:///

  7 motorola tmos power mosfet transistor device data information for using the d 2 pak surface mount package recommended footprint for surface mounted applications surface mount board layout is a critical portion of the total design. the footprint for the semiconductor packages must be the correct size to ensure proper solder connection interface between the board and the package. with the correct pad geometry, the packages will self align when subjected to a solder reflow process. mm inches 0.33 8.38 0.08 2.032 0.04 1.016 0.63 17.02 0.42 10.66 0.12 3.05 0.24 6.096 power dissipation for a surface mount device the power dissipation for a surface mount device is a function of the drain pad size. these can vary from the minimum pad size for soldering to a pad size given for maximum power dissipation. power dissipation for a surface mount device is determined by t j(max) , the maximum rated junction temperature of the die, r q ja , the thermal resistance from the device junction to ambient, and the operating temperature, t a . using the values provided on the data sheet, p d can be calculated as follows: p d = t j(max) t a r q ja the values for the equation are found in the maximum ratings table on the data sheet. substituting these values into the equation for an ambient temperature t a of 25 c, one can calculate the power dissipation of the device. for a d 2 pak device, p d is calculated as follows. p d = 150 c 25 c 50 c/w = 2.5 watts the 50 c/w for the d 2 p ak package assumes the use of the recommended footprint on a glass epoxy printed circuit board to achieve a power dissipation of 2.5 w atts. there are other alternatives to achieving higher power dissipation from the surface mount packages. one is to increase the area of the drain pad. by increasing the area of the drain pad, the power dissipation can be increased. although one can almost double the power dissipation with this method, one will be giving up area on the printed circuit board which can defeat the purpose of using surface mount technology . for example, a graph of r q ja versus drain pad area is shown in figure 16. figure 16. thermal resistance versus drain pad area for the d 2 pak package (typical) 2.5 watts a, area (square inches) board material = 0.0625 g10/fr4, 2 oz copper t a = 25 c 60 70 50 40 30 20 16 14 12 10 8 6 4 2 0 3.5 watts 5 watts to ambient ( c/w) r ja , thermal resist ance, junction q another alternative would be to use a ceramic substrate or an aluminum core board such as thermal clad ? . using a board material such as thermal clad, an aluminum core board, the power dissipation can be doubled using the same footprint. free datasheet http:///
  8 motorola tmos power mosfet transistor device data solder stencil guidelines prior to placing surface mount components onto a printed circuit board, solder paste must be applied to the pads. solder stencils are used to screen the optimum amount. these stencils are typically 0.008 inches thick and may be made of brass or stainless steel. for packages such as the sc59, sc70/sot323, sod123, sot23, sot143, sot223, so8, so14, so16, and smb/smc diode packages, the stencil opening should be the same as the pad size or a 1:1 registration. this is not the case with the dp ak and d 2 pak packages. if one uses a 1:1 opening to screen solder onto the drain pad, misalignment and/or atombstoningo may occur due to an excess of solder. for these two packages, the opening in the stencil for the paste should be approximately 50% of the tab area. the opening for the leads is still a 1:1 registration. figure 17 shows a typical stencil for the dp ak and d 2 pak packages. the pattern of the opening in the stencil for the drain pad is not critical as long as it allows approximately 50% of the pad to be covered with paste. ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? figure 17. typical stencil for dpak and d 2 pak packages solder paste openings stencil soldering precautions the melting temperature of solder is higher than the rated temperature of the device. when the entire device is heated to a high temperature, failure to complete soldering within a short time could result in device failure. therefore, the following items should always be observed in order to minimize the thermal stress to which the devices are subjected. ? always preheat the device. ? the delta temperature between the preheat and soldering should be 100 c or less.* ? when preheating and soldering, the temperature of the leads and the case must not exceed the maximum temperature ratings as shown on the data sheet. when using infrared heating with the reflow soldering method, the difference shall be a maximum of 10 c. ? the soldering temperature and time shall not exceed 260 c for more than 10 seconds. ? when shifting from preheating to soldering, the maximum temperature gradient shall be 5 c or less. ? after soldering has been completed, the device should be allowed to cool naturally for at least three minutes. gradual cooling should be used as the use of forced cooling will increase the temperature gradient and result in latent failure due to mechanical stress. ? mechanical stress or shock should not be applied during cooling. * soldering a device without preheating can cause excessive thermal shock and stress which can result in damage to the device. * due to shadowing and the inability to set the wave height to incorporate other surface mount components, the d 2 pak is not recommended for wave soldering. free datasheet http:///
